We are very sad to advise that Earl left us, March 8, 2015, in Saint John, N.B.
Born Oct. 12, 1930, in Sydney, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Sidney and Catherine (Armstrong) Smith.
Earl was a person who stood by his strongly-held opinions even if they ran contrary to generally-accepted views. This stance sometimes made him enemies, but they were far outnumbered by his many friends.
He led an active and varied life, and was a man of many talents. His career spanned positions with insurance, sales and community service organizations. Some of the activities Earl did in his spare time included choral singing and directing, sailor, service club district governor, city alderman, TV news commentator, rugby, tennis and basketball player and volunteer for many community groups and organizations.
Earl is survived by Joyce Robertson; daughters, Nancy, Whitehorse, Linda (Scott), Sydney; son Greg, Saint John; stepdaughter Coral (Chris) Matheson and stepson Charles (Michelle), Grand Bay, N.B.; stepson-in-law John Maher, Saint John and their families; granddaughters, Crystal (Lennan), Inverness and Lindsay (Darren), Toronto; grandsons, Shane, Sydney and Kyle, Dartmouth; great-grandson Chace and great granddaughter Sawyer, Toronto. He is also survived by cousins, Sheila Calvert, Vancouver; Marilyn (Joe) Gledhill, Halifax; Pat (Ray) Chenery, Kitchener; Joan MacDaniel, Margaree Forks; Shirley (Claude) Taylor, Sydney and many others too numerous to mention.
He was predeceased by his parents and stepdaughter Carrie Robertson.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Rd., 506-646-2424.
His wish to donate his body to the Dalhousie Medical Faculty of Medicine could not be full-filled. His body has been cremated and celebrations will be held at a later date. Remembrances can be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
