In his 90th year, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, best friend and beloved husband of Gloria (nee Currie) for 66 years.
Predeceased by daughter Carrolyn (1966) and Patrick (Little Sonny-2004). Also predeceased by his parents Joe and Minnie Burke of Cape Breton Island, his sisters Adeline (Murray), Sister (Dunkie), Bea (Mose), Nancy (Raymond), brothers Mickey, Earl (survived by Christie), Joe (Erma), Buddy (Beatrice), and Dannie.
Sonny was born in and loved the East Coast and left behind many friends and family to move to Ontario in search of a better life for his family (1966).
Loving father of Ronnie (Maryanne), Genevieve (Dan), Louella (Joe), Edward (Darlene), and daughter-in-law Marilyn. Sonny had 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Sonny worked in Cape Breton in a lumber mill, the coal mines in Cape Breton and worked in Hamilton for many years at Colombian Carbon. Sonny had many beautiful years of retirement. He was a member of St. Ann’s Church for many years, grounds keeping and ushering. Sonny loved his country music from the 1940s and 50s, and enjoyed his time in his garden and with his family and friends.
A special thanks to his new friends and staff at Victoria Gardens. Visitation will be held at the Marlatt Funeral Home, 615 Main St. East (east of Sanford), Hamilton, on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Prayers at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 120 Sherman Ave. North (Sherman and Barton), Hamilton, on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 600 Spring Gardens Rd. (at Plains Rd. West), Burlington.
