James Sloan



SLOAN, James Angus, 84 of Aylesford, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Veterans Unit, Middleton, NS.
Born in Bear River, N.S., he was a son of the late Easterby and Mary Alice (Sedgwick) Sloan. He was a second generation Canadian, his parents having emigrated from England. Angus was a veteran having served in the Canadian Army from 1948 to 1973 when he retired. During his military service he served with the UN Mission to Egypt during the 1967 conflict. Following his time in the military, Angus moved to New Glasgow and held a variety of jobs from child minding to working in a local convenience store. He enjoyed his life in that area of the province very much and made many lifelong friends. He was loved and admired by his extended step families as well. Angus was an active member of the First Baptist Church in New Glasgow for many years taking part in church suppers and bake sales, having been well known for his jams and preserves. He held many church positions, including Deacon and singing in the choir. He was very much loved by the congregation there. In 2013, he moved to the Annapolis Valley to be near his family when his health began to deteriorate and he enjoyed his time there greatly. He was also an avid knitter. Angus is survived by his brother Harvey Alec Sloan; sons, James (Elizabeth) Sloan, Kentville; Richard (Kathy) Sloan, Greenwood; David (Jacquie) Sloan, Aylesford; and daughter, Janet Sloan (Naoma), Moose Jaw, SK; grandchildren: David, Michael, Timothy, Jessica, Nicholas and Alanna; 5 great-grandchildren, a step-daughter Linda Brine and her children. Besides his parents, Angus was predeceased by his wives, Evelyn, June and Elsie and by his brother, Easterby Jr. and sisters, Hannah (Graham) MacNab, Mary Sloan and Jean (Charles) Melbrew. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Memorial service followed by a reception will take place on March 26, 2015 at 11:00 am in the First Baptist Church, 896 East River Road, New Glasgow; Rev. Randy Stanton presiding. Interment will be at Abercrombie Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church, New Glasgow, N.S.
At this time the family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the VON for the care given to Angus, and also to the staff of the Valley Regional Hospital and to the Mayflower and Transitional Units of Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton where he was treated with dignity and respect during his illness.
