Freda Durling

DURLING, Freda Pearl - of Nictaux Falls, NS passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015 at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown. Born in North Kingston on January 18, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Mary Ann (Cross) Smith. She was the last member of her family. In 1940, Freda married Harry Durling in Bridgetown where they started their 48 years together, later moving to Nictaux and then Nictaux Falls. Freda was a dedicated homemaker who enjoyed baking, trying new recipes, sewing, knitting, needlework and quilting. She looked after her family very well. She was a member of the Nictaux Baptist Church where in earlier years she taught Sunday School. She was a member of the Nictaux Friendly Club and later became a member of the Kingston Seniors Club. In 1999, at age 85 Freda left her home of 52 years and moved to Parkview Seniors Complex as one of the first residents. She was lucky to have good neighbours there too. Freda will be sadly missed by her daughter Joan Hoogerwerf of South Williamston, granddaughter Karen (Johnny) Shearer, Middleton; grandsons Michael (Jennifer) Hoogerwerf, Margaretville and David Hoogerwerf, Mississauga, Ont., also missed by great granddaughter Mythia Shearer and great grandsons, Michael, Garrett and Liam Hoogerwerf. She is also survived by brother-in-law Bud Durling, Fairview; also many nieces and nephews. Freda was predeceased by her husband Harry Mack Durling, sons Edwin Harry and Vaughn Carrol; sisters Etta Willett, Lily Smith and Bertha Baker; brothers Victor, Russell, Donald, Reginald and Clifford Smith and son-in-law Joe Hoogerwerf. By request, there will be no visitation. A private family funeral service will be held at the Middleton Funeral Home 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448, where a memorial book will be available for signing. She will be greatly missed by all. Interment will be in the Nictaux Cemetery at a later date. Donations in memory may be made to the Nictaux Cemetery or the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia.
