Leo Popwell, 85, a former resident of Pleasant Street, Glace Bay passed away on Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Taigh Na Mara.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (MacDonald) Popwell.Leo worked in the coal mines for a few years then moved to Ontario where he was employed with Shopsey’s Food’s, now Maple Leaf.
Leo served overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 3, Glace Bay and the Glace Bay Pensioners Club. He was an avid Blue Jays fan as well as an avid 45s card player. In his younger years, Leo loved playing baseball. He will be remembered as a very kind and gentle man.
Leo is survived by his wife, Vera (Murphy) Popwell; daughter, Darlene Blackburn (Dave), Glace Bay; four sons, Leo (June), Halifax, Gerry (Hazel), Glace Bay, Darrell (Carole), Kevin (Christine), both Toronto; sisters, Betty Ikara, Toronto, Diane Gaigneur, Delores McNeil, both Glace Bay; and two brothers, Frank ‘Conchie’ (Connie) Popwell, London, Ont., and Robert, Glace Bay.
Leo is also survived by twelve grandchildren, Sarah, Kyle, Brittany, Greg, Tyler, Derek, Brendan, Liam, Kristen, Kayla, Emily, Shelly; five great-grandchildren and a wonderful friend and sister-in-law, Anne Popwell, Sydney.
Besides his parents, Leo was predeceased by his brother, Morris, sister, Gloria, daughter, Elizabeth and son, Kevin.
Visitation will be held on Friday from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass is Saturday, 10 a.m. in Holy Cross Church followed by a reception in the church hall, Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Cremation will take place after the funeral mass.
