LEIGHTON, GLADYS KATHALEEN
(1925-2015)
Mrs. Gladys K. Leighton of Grand Harbour, Grand Manan Island passed away on Tuesday March 24, 2015 at the Grand Manan Hospital following a period of declining health. She was born the daughter of the late Percy and Emma (Fritz) Parker at Castalia.
Gladys worked at the Sears Order Office in Grand Harbour for many years, was well known as The Cake Lady as she made cakes for birthday parties and special occasions for Island residents since 1974. She belonged to the Woman’s Missionary Society, the Tidal Thread Quilting Club, and helped organize the Helping Hands Club. Also she was one of the “1925 Babies” group. She attended the Community Life Church faithfully.
She is survived by her daughters; Patricia Wood (John) of Castalia, Susan Harris (George) of Grand Harbour. Two sisters; Carolyn Flagg, and Myrtle (Peggy) Small both of Castalia. One sister-in-law Lydia Parker of Castalia. Three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Errol Leighton, one daughter Priscilla Howe, one son Charles Howe. Granddaughter Kelly Greenough, and one brother Herbert Parker.
Visiting will take place at the Community Life Church, Grand Harbour on Friday from 6 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place at the church on Saturday March 28, 2015 at 1:00 pm with Ruth Fair-Parker and Rev. Dr. Jeff Benson officiating. Burial will take place later in the spring at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Gladys may be made to the Charlotte County Cancer Society, or the Maple Grove Cemetery.
