Dorothy Anita (Dean) Otto

OTTO, Dorothy Anita (Dean), Truro, died Friday, April 3, 2015, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre. Born in Dartmouth on April 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late James E. and Hazel May (Blakeney) Dean. Dorothy was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and Maritime Business College. She married James D. Otto, on June 29, 1956 and began their family in Dartmouth, later moving to Truro where they raised their four children. Dorothy worked as an Administrative Assistant in Halifax prior to the birth of her first born and as the children grew, she began working outside the home at Canada Life Assurance and later working at the Nova Scotia Teacher’s College, in the Continuing Education Department, until her retirement. Dorothy is survived by her four children, Carolyn (Bradford Yuill), Truro, NS; Peter (Lisa) DeWinton, AB; Cynthia, Truro, NS and Robert (Susan), Corner Brook, NL; sister Marion (Kevin Sheerstone), Sorrento, BC; grandchildren Liam and Bryant Yuill; Tasha Otto; Rhiannon, Olivia and Samuel Cullip; Joseph, Christopher, Cody and Brook Otto and many loved nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her husband James D., sister Marjorie (John Scott), brothers, James A. and Eric K. Dean and stepmother Pearl (Archibald). Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. There will be a funeral service at St. John’s Anglican Church, 256 Church Street, Truro, on Friday, May 15 at 2 p.m. Following the service, the family will be receiving friends at the Truro Fire Hall, 165 Victoria Street, Truro. Family interment will be at Terrace Hill Cemetery on Kaulback Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in her memory, to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, 20 Eglinton Avenue W #1600, Toronto, ON, M4R 1K8.
