Winfield "Win" Hall Brown
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Winfield "Win" Hall Brown, aged 84, of Springhill. Win passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
Born in Springhill, he was a son of the late Arthur Hall and Pearl Edith (Gibson) Brown.
As a teenager, Win began working with his father in the family operated funeral business, A H Brown Funeral Service Ltd., in Springhill. Win played an integral part in caring for the families affected by the 1956 and 1958 mine disasters. Following the death of his father, Win continued serving the families of Springhill and area along with his son David, as owner/operator until his retirement. Even after retirement he remained involved with the business making sure that families needs were served. He served the community of Springhill for over 60 years. In the late 1970's he also began operating Brown's Ambulance Service, which he operated in Springhill until the Provincial EHS began. In the late 1980's he operated Brown's Furniture Store for 10 years.
Win lead a committee to raise funds for the building of the Springhill Winter Receiving Vault and was a Trustee of The Hillside Cemetery Perpetual Care program.
Win was a member of St. Andrews-Wesley United Church, Springhill and sang in the Church choir. He was a member of The Travelers, the Cumberland Lodge # 5 Knights of Pythias and the Springhill Chamber of Commerce. In his younger years he was very involved with Morgan horses, owning his own horse the spirited "Tamerly Tomahawk (Tommy)". He enjoyed spending time at "The Ranch" in Williamsdale, hunting, fishing, gardening, snowmobiling, four wheeling, boating and especially time with his family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by sons, Arthur R. H. (Virginia) Brown, Williamsdale and H. David (Lena) Brown, Amherst; sister, Ruth Merlin, Amherst; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; companion, Betty Sterling.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Effie Louise Mitchell in 2011; brother, Horace G. Brown and sister, Olwyn Keir.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to A. H. Brown Funeral Service, 5 McFarlane Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) where visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 3, 2015 from the A H Brown Funeral Home with The Reverend Wayne McCarther officiating. Burial in Hillside Cemetery, Springhill, at a later date.
