Matthew Saleem Al-Khouri ascended to the arms of Our Heavenly Father on Saturday, April 4th 2015, following his strong and courageous battle with leukemia. His final moments were spent wrapped in the loving arms of mommy and daddy with his loving family close by his side.

Matthew’s life may seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of his existence with us on earth far exceeded the quantity of time in which he lived. His gentle smile and deep dimples could melt the hearts of those around him. Matthew’s playful spirit and limitless energy could always be felt by others. Matthew taught us that even extreme adversity cannot conquer inner happiness. His beautiful smile and the joy that radiated from within his soul is a true gift that he has left with us forever.

Matthew loved reading his books, watching his movies, and dancing. He was well known for his love of food and often requested his daddy's home cooking. A cheerful soul, Matthew's laughter and humour warmed our hearts so that every day was indeed happy. Matthew enjoyed going for drives in daddy's truck up the mountain, playing in the tractors and throwing rocks in the stream. A true momma’s boy, Matthew was always comforted by quiet moments shared coloring, playing play-doh and cuddling with his mommy. Matthew cherished his play time with his Papa Wayne and quiet time with his Tete Rajaa. He adored his little sister and baby brother and welcomed every opportunity to play with his best friends. To Georgia and Silas, Matthew was a kind-hearted big brother and for us he will always be our precious angel.

Matthew was a remarkably strong boy. He possessed strength, perseverance, an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges yet continued to smile throughout the hardest of days. With his courage, he led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. Although we will deeply miss him, especially his smile and dimples, he will forever remain in our hearts. Matthew’s taught us about life, we were able to create wonderful memories and it has been a privilege and honour to be his parents. Matthew means "a gift from God" and we are so blessed to have received this gift.

Matthew is survived by his parents Saleem and Barbara Al-Khouri and his sister and brother, Georgia Ann and Silas Saleem as well as his maternal grandfather Wayne McKay (Jean MacDougall) and paternal grandmother Rajaa Haddad. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Georgina McKay.

Matthew leaves behind many wonderful caregivers, friends, and communities who provided love and support that enriched his quality of life. All of these special people, too numerous to mention, provided Matthew with love and dignity in his life and also in his death.

We would like to thank all of the caregivers, nurses and doctors who have been part of Matthew's care. We specifically want to acknowledge the staff of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, The IWK (Halifax), Sick Kids (Toronto), The NIH (Maryland), and St. Jude Children’s (Tennessee).

A celebration of Matthew’s life will take place at Sydney River United Protestant Church, on Saturday, April 11th, 2015, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception in the church basement.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pediatrics Unit at the Regional, the IWK Foundation, or Canadian Blood Services.
