ALEX NAKONECHNY
March 20, 1927 – April 3, 2015

Alex was born of humble parents John and Marfa Nakonechny on March 20th, 1927 in Telhin, Ukraine. In 1928, Alex and his Mother journeyed to Canada to join his Father in the Foxford area. He attended school at Celtic, a small one-room school about two and one-half miles from his parents homestead. When he was sixteen, he joined the army cadets, and attended Agricultural school at the U of S. Upon returning he pursued logging, then farmed and operated a store in Foxford. In 1950, Alex married Marie Wozny, and from this union their son Garry was born. In the late 50’s Alex travelled to Moose Jaw to take a Carpentry course. He then farmed in the Foxford, Choiceland, Carrot River, and Garrick areas; however, carpentry was his passion.
For many years Alex was very involved with the Elks organization. He was District Deputy from 1981-1982, then Exalted Ruler from 2004-2006. During his time with the Elks he perfected his desire to serve the community. He enjoyed the fellowship and made many good friends.
Alex worked on many projects throughout the years including the Choiceland Elks Hall and maintenance of the Elks Homes in Nipawin. His knowledge of carpentry and building codes was especially valuable in the installation of an elevator in the Nipawin Elks Hall. His excellent craftsmanship is visible in the many homes he built for family members and friends. Alex worked in many places, even as far North as Rankin Inlet, Nunavut where he did work for the RCMP detachment.
In later years, though at times stricken with medical issues, Alex’s determination to live life to the fullest included good times with Florence at his side playing cards, dancing and socializing with friends.
Alex will certainly be missed by his wife Florence, his son Garry, and his brothers and sisters; Helen Beskorwayne (Harold Smith), sister-in-law Elsie Nakonechny, Elizabeth (Stanley Korol), Tony (Ruby), Leonard (Yvonne), Olga (Roger Godin), Lena (Merv Wourms), and Florence’s family Violet (Ray Froese), Wayne (Darlene), Garry (Bev), Gale (Bev) and all their families.
Alex’s love, devotion and pride were always of great measures for his numerous nieces, nephews, and Florence’s grandchildren. They were always very special to him, and they loved him dearly.
Alex was predeceased by an infant brother, his mother Marfa in 1971, his father John in 1984, brother Joe in 1994 and niece Nicole in 1987.
In October of 2009, Alex was awarded a Honourary Life Membership from the Nipawin Elks Lodge. Its final line states,
“Well done thou good and faithful servant”

The funeral service will be held on Monday, April 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Choiceland Elks Memorial Hall. Alex will be laid to rest in Garrick Cemetery. Memorial tributes may be made to the Diabetes Association or Pineview Lodge. Online condolences may be made at www.coventryfuneralservices.ca. The family placed their trust with Coventry Funeral Services Nipawin, SK 306-862-4233.
