Sister Evelyn MacLeod died peacefully on Thursday, April 9, 2015, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney.
Born in Dunvegan, Inverness County on December 29, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John C. and Catherine (MacKinnon) MacLeod.
Evelyn entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1945 and made profession in August, 1947. She began her teaching career in Newcastle, NB, and for more than thirty five years she served as classroom teacher and administrator in schools throughout the Maritimes, including Iona, New Victoria, Mabou, Larry’s River and Sydney.
Upon retirement from the school system, Evelyn was appointed to Baddeck and later, Fredericton, where she served within the CND community as local leader and bursar, and was actively involved in parish ministry. Evelyn was a deeply spiritual woman whose faith life was an inspiration to all those with whom she lived and worked.
Sister Evelyn’s last years were spent in retirement in Mabou and Sydney where she continued her ministry of prayer for those in need. In 2011, with her health declining, Evelyn moved to the CND Health Care Centre where she was lovingly cared for by the staff from MacGillivray Guest Home.
Sister Evelyn is survived by sisters Alice Beaubien, Richmond, Quebec; Catherine Schiffnann, Brewster, Massachusetts; Christena MacLellan, Inverness and Theresa MacLeod, Halifax.
She was predeceased by one sister Mary, CSM, and by brothers Dr. Charles, Father John and Murdock.
Visitation for Sister Evelyn will be held Monday, April 13 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Rev. Bill Burke officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
