Mary "Sybil" Smith

SMITH, MARY "SYBIL" (MERCER)
Sybil Smith, wife of the late John I. “Jack” Smith, passed away at her residence in Rocmaura Nursing Home, with her daughter at her side, on Friday, April 10, 2015. Born July 16, 1923 in Bishop’s Cove, NL, she was a daughter of the late John and Susannah (Gosse) Mercer.
Sybil’s move to Saint John happened when she chased Jack, the love of her life, here when he moved for work. They were married shortly after, in 1947, and spent almost 67 years together before his passing last February. Sybil was a homemaker for most of her life, although she worked for Zellers on King Street for a few years, and also sold Avon in the 1960s. She was a member of St. John’s (Stone) Church, serving with the ACW, a member of the Saint John Regional Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, and she also campaigned for various organizations. She was known for her cooking and baking, especially her sweets and homemade bread, and also sewed, knitted, and crocheted. She and Jack shared a wide circle of friends, and loved playing cards, but her greatest joy in life was her family.
Sybil is survived by her daughter, Susan Merritt (Larry); granddaughter, Jennifer Ganong (Mark); great-granddaughter, Rhylee Ganong; brother-in-law Leslie Smith (Ella); and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her three brothers: Albert, Gordon, and Richard; and her sister, Elizabeth Joyce.
Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 2 pm from St. John’s (Stone) Church, 87 Carleton Street, Saint John. A private family interment will follow in Fernhill Cemetery.
Remembrances to the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or Stone Church Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.
