EVANS, KATHERINE JEAN
It is with heavy hearts the family of K. Jean Evans announces her passing on Monday, April 20, 2015 at Ridgewood Veteran’s Wing. Born on May 3, 1916 in Saint John, she was a daughter of the late Herbert G. and Katherine (Crawford) Evans and step-daughter of Ella (Crawford) Evans.
Jean was educated in Saint John, Sherbrooke, QC and Toronto, ON. She served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (W.D.) in Radio Public Relations, Ottawa, during World War II. She returned to New Brunswick after the war to reside at her Mother’s family home in Westfield.
Jean was employed as a secretary for Dr. T. W. Cushing in the Special Education Department of School District 20 (currently known as Anglophone South) for 25 years before retiring in 1980.
She was an active member of Westfield United Church, serving on all church boards and was an honourary member of Session. She contributed essays on the history of her church congregation at the village of Westfield. She was also a valued member of the Westfield Golf and Country Club, Union Club, I.O.D.E (Katherine E. Black and Lady Moyra Ponsonby Chapters), and had volunteered at Meals on Wheels for 15 years.
Jean was the last surviving member of her immediate family and will be missed by her niece, Marilyn Wray (Dane) and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Jean was predeceased by a brother, Richard “Dick” Evans; sister-in-law, Dorothy Evans; and several cousins.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Although there will be no visitation, family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Jean’s life at Westfield United Church on a date and time to be announced. Interment will take place at Old Cedar Hill Cemetery.
