1930 - 2015
George Bastarache, 84, of Dieppe, NB, passed away on Saturday, May 23rd, 2015, at his residence. Born in Leger Corner, NB, he was the son of the late Alyre and the late Evangeline (LeBlanc) Bastarache.
Prior to retirement, Mr. Bastarache was a member of the Dieppe Fire Department for 50 years, 30 as Chief, he was founder/owner/operator of George’s Plumbing and Heating Ltd from 1956-1985 and the Chartersville Funeral Home from 1984-1992; a director of Cable Service Ltée from 1975-1982, having founded this service with a group of 10 businessmen to bring cable TV to southeast NB.
A master plumber by trade and an accomplished businessman, he was awarded the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Medal; the Queen’s Gold Jubilee Medal and the Paul Harris Award from the Rotary Club. Mr. Bastarache was a major sponsor of the Dieppe Voyageurs Junior “B” Hockey Club.
He was a member of the Plumbing and Mechanical Contractors of NB, the Moncton Northeast Construction Association, an honorary life member of the Maritime Fire Chiefs Association, a member of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs; NB Honorary Chief for Muscular Dystrophy of Canada in 1985, a UCT member since 1967, a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #01310, the Lakeside Golf & Country Club(MFR), the Sainte-Thérèse parish choir and a former member of the Dieppe Musical Club.
He is survived by his wife, Holly (Richard); two daughters: Monique (Gary Mellon) and Michele (Michael Belliveau), both of Moncton; one son, Mark of Dieppe; one sister, Rita Hebert of Moncton; one brother, Thomas of Dieppe; four grandchildren: Jenna Watson, Michelle and Jason (Erin) MacEachern and Graig Mellon; two great-grandchildren: Ethan and Jackson; sister-in-law, Jeanne Bastarache of Leominster, MA; brother-in-law, Romeo (Helene) Richard of Dieppe; sister-in-law, Jeannine Richard and her children: Sandy, Terry “Racketeer”, Kim and Eric, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Lorraine; five sisters: Maria, Therese, Jeannette, Dora and Irene and also by six brothers: Alban, Edgar, Francois, Eli, Yvon and Rene.
Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, NB (857-1901) on Thursday from 7 to 9 pm and also on Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from Sainte-Thérèse Roman Catholic Church, Dieppe, NB, on Saturday, May 30th, 2015 at 11 am.
Interment in Chartersville Funeral Home Columbarium, Dieppe, NB.
