The family sadly announces the passing of Bernice (MacDonald) Stewart, age78, of Port Hawkesbury, suddenly at home on Friday, May 29, 2015.
Born in Glace Bay, she was a beloved daughter of the late Rankin and Hazel (Kelloway) MacDonald.
After the passing of her husband, although a quiet woman Bernice took on the difficult task of learning to drive at the age of 49 and taking care of things on her own. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, Sudoku and the news of her granddaughters.
Bernice was a member of St. Joseph Parish, Port Hawkesbury, TOPS and after her retirement, The Evergreen Club. A longtime resident of Port Hawkesbury she always enjoyed a trip back to Glace Bay to visit family.
She is survived by sons, Garth (Marlene), Havre Boucher; Donald (Sally), Port Hawkesbury; Darrell (Trisha), Rothesay, N.B.; Derek (Ann-Marie), Oromocto, N.B.; granddaughters, Allison, Milton Keynes, England; Emma, Grand Prairie, Alta.; and Kylie Mae, Oromocto, N.B.; sisters, Melba MacDonald and Yvonne Fiolek both of Sydney; brothers, Bryson (Joan), Charlottetown, PEI; Garfield (Tina), Miami, Florida; Eldon (Cathy), Middle Sackville; Maxwell (Mary), Glace Bay; several nieces and nephews.
Bernice was predeceased by her husband of 27 years, Jim and son, Kevin in infancy. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. (today) Monday in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 724 Granville St., Port Hawkesbury. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, in St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, Port Hawkesbury with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in memory of Bernice to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Diabetes Association.
