Vera Bliss Steele passed away peacefully at the Wolfville Nursing Home on Sunday, June 7, 2015 at the age of 95. She was a well-known resident of Port Williams where she was an active member of the Port Williams United Baptist Church, serving for many years as a Sunday school teacher, an active member of both the Missionary Group and was a Life Member of the Loyal Workers. As well, she was a member for many years of the Port Williams Seniors Group where she served as secretary. Vera had many hobbies including doing the daily crossword puzzles, participating in rug hooking groups in the valley and enjoyed playing her harmonicas at various senior functions and at church. Born in Lower Canard in 1920 she was the daughter of the late Havelock and May Franklin. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil and her sister, Marjorie (Norton). She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia (Robert) Burgher, Port Williams; and sons, Murray (Peggy), Burlington, Ontario and Eric, Brantford, Ontario. She will be missed by her 13 grandchildren, Alan (Darla) Burgher, Karen (Greg McLellan), Debbie (Aaron MacIntyre), Cindy (Brian Gollinger), Chris (Michelle Wright), Tim, Bruce, Tara (John Cooper), Ben, Tabitha (Colin Guinard), Erica, Deborah and Gabriella, as well as 12 great grandchildren. Visitation was held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2015 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday June 11, 2015 at the Port Williams United Baptist Church with Reverend David Ogilvie officiating. Interment followed at the Scott’s Bay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations may be made to the Port Williams United Baptist Church Memorial Fund.
