MURLEY, Garry Wentworth - Garry passed away early on Friday, June 5, 2015 in the Hants Community Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, Windsor. He was the beloved husband of Zelma (Smith), Windsor; loving father of Michael (Lesley Adcock), Toronto and Doug (Laurie), Windsor; cherished grandfather of Matthew, Windsor and granddaughter, Erin (Scott Sanford), Mahone Bay; dear brother of Ray Murley, St. Catharines, ON; Shirley Schade, Cornwall, ON; half sister, Ethelyn Harlow, Toronto, ON. Garry was predeceased by his parents, John and Stella (Henshaw) Murley; half siblings, Reg, Cecil, Chet, Bill, Joe and Mary. Garry graduated from UNB in 1961. He met and married his wife Zelma that same year and started his teaching career in Bass River. In 1966, he accepted a job at Windsor Regional High School as Vice Principal and Guidance Counselor. In 1969, he became principal of Windsor Elementary and ended his career as principal at both Three Mile Plains and Newport Station Elementary schools. Garry was a very active member of the community. He was involved with minor hockey, was a founding member of Sam Slick Days, Winter Carnival and the Avon Valley Golf Club. He was past president of the VON and the Windsor Gyro Club and sat on many other volunteer committees including the Windsor Recreation Commission. Garry was a respected musician and played bass in various groups, including the Centennial Dixieland Jazz Band and the Big Valley Swing Orchestra. Garry enjoyed woodworking, playing music and spending time with his family and friends, especially at the family cottage in Baxter’s Harbour. Arrangements were entrusted to DeMont Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 419 Albert St., PO Box 981, Windsor, NS B0N 2T0 (902-798-8317). There was no visitation, by request. A funeral service was held 11 a.m. Monday, June 8 in Windsor United Church, 613 King St., Windsor, Rev. Bill Gibson officiated. A reception followed in the church annex. Donations in memory of Garry may be made to the Hants County VON or the Hants Community Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, 89 Payzant Dr., Windsor, NS B0N 2T0.
