It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neila (MacLean) Johnston, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, with her loving family by her side.
Born in Glace Bay, on Feb. 3, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Angus L. and Mary B. (MacAulay) MacLean.
Neila graduated in 1942 from Glace Bay High School following which she began working in retail with the T. Eaton Company and later with Toby’s and Ein’s in Glace Bay.
Later, Neila returned to school and graduated from the Cape Breton Business College in 1968. Upon graduation, she was retained as an instructor in various subject areas at the college, retiring in 1986.
Neila was a faithful and devoted member of Newsom United Church since its founding. She was also an active member of the Citizens Service League and served for many years as a Volunteer Porter at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Neila was a loyal member of the Jubilee Rebekah Lodge and was recently recognized for 40 years of continuous and dedicated service to the Rebekahs.
For many years Neila was an avid skater and bowler and loved a friendly game of cards with her “Scat Club." Some of Neila’s fondest memories were of her holidays and vacations spent in Round Island, which she enjoyed since childhood.
Besides her parents, Neila was predeceased by her husband, Harold; daughter, Judy Tutty; brother, Lauchlin and sister-in-law, Joyce; sister, Katherine; brother-in-law, Earl Johnston; brother-in-law, James Luff; grandson, Kyle Johnston; and niece, Heather MacLean.
Surviving are Neila’s three sons, William 'Bill' and wife Daria, Read (Linda) and Kenneth, all of Glace Bay. Also surviving are Neila’s sister, Audrey Luff, Ottawa and a very special sister-in-law, Anne Johnston; son-in-law, Jack Tutty; grandchildren, Brianna, Andrew, Tanya; and great-grandchild; Kaylah, along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 12, from 2-4 and from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m. in Newsom United Church, Dominion Street, officiated by Rev. Donald MacDonald.
Interment to take place in Greenwood Cemetery Immediately following the service. A reception will follow in Newsom Church Hall. Neila will be taken to the church on Saturday at noontime.
Donations in Neila’s memory may be made to the Children’s Wish Foundation, the Diabetes Association, the Parkinson’s Foundation or the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
