BENSON, THELMA MAE
February 27, 1914 - June 14, 2015
At the Saint John Regional Hospital on Sunday June 14, 2015 Thelma Benson of Saint John NB peacefully went to be with her Lord and Saviour.
She was predeceased by her husband Harvey Benson in February of 2004 and daughter in-law Jeanette in 2003.
She is survived by her only child Cameron Benson and his wife Helen (Cormier) of Saint John as well as three grandchildren, Duane (Wanda) of Quispamsis, Shaun of Moncton, and Michelle of Silverton, British Columbia, two step-grandsons Christopher and Mark Cormier. In addition, she is survived by six great-grandchildren Lauren, Brooke and Shayla Benson of Moncton, Amber and Kyle Benson of Quispamsis and Maxwell Benson of Silverton BC.
Thelma was born on February 27, 1914 the eldest of seven children born to Earl and Lucie (Dakin) Ingersoll of Grand Manan, NB. Predeceased by her sisters Seta Greenlaw, Francis Foster, Rev Myrtle Ingersoll, brothers Gilbert Ingersoll and Grimmer Ingersoll. She is survived by her youngest sister Marion Sellars of Pennfield, NB.
She was married to Harvey Benson of Seal Cove Grand Manan on April 25, 1935. Shortly after their marriage they were posted to Machias Seal Island where Harvey was lighthouse keeper. This is where they spent the first eight years of their marriage, many times being the only people on the island. They moved to Southern Head Lighthouse on Grand Manan Island in Aug 1944 and remained there until June of 1955 when they moved to Saint John where Harvey was employed with what is now the Canadian Coast Guard.
Thelma’s family will receive relatives and friends at Hillcrest United Baptist Church, 476 Lancaster Ave on Wednesday, June 17 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 18 at 11:30 am at Hillcrest United Baptist Church, 476 Lancaster Ave, Saint John E2M 2L7. Service will be conducted by Rev Andrew Morse Pastor of Hillcrest and Thelma’s nephews Rev Perry Ingersoll and Rev David Ingersoll. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery. A reception celebrating Thelma’s long life will be held following the funeral service at the church.
A sincere “Thank You” goes to the Staff of “Darlenes Home Support Services” for all the wonderful home care that they have provided over the past several years.
In lieu of flowers, Remembrances may be made to “Memorial Fund” of Hillcrest Baptist Church or the charity of the donors choice.
