Passed on: June 16th, 2015

It is with great sadness that the family of Michael 'Aubrey' MacKenzie regret to announce his passing on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at the Glace Bay Hospital, after a brief illness.
Born on May 8, 1933, in Glace Bay, N.S., Aubrey was the son of the late John and Jessie (Campbell) MacKenzie.
Aubrey was well known in the community having served as a municipal councillor for 17 years for the former Town of Glace Bay and also as a member of the Knights of Columbus. In his younger years, Aubrey coached little league baseball in MacKay’s Corner. Early in his working career, Aubrey worked as a fuel delivery driver for Texaco for seven years and later retired from his employment after 36 years of service with Irving Oil Limited. Aubrey held a special place in his heart for his Ben Eoin family and the many summer nights he spent around the campfire over the past 40 years. He always had a smile and a wave for everyone who passed his way.
Aubrey will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley (Weatherby) and sons, Kevin (Nancy) and Darren (Andrea). He is also survived by his only granddaughter, Jenna (Zach), who held a very special place in Aubrey’s heart. Also left to mourn his passing are brothers, Buddie, Alfred (Pat), Johnny (Rita); sisters, Arlene (John), all of Glace Bay, and Carmel (Len), Ontario and many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours. Aubrey will also be missed by his faithful companion, Hunter.
Aubrey was predeceased by his brother, Milton; sister-in-law, Bernadette; his sister, Faye; as well as two brothers in infancy, Joseph and Garfield.
At Aubrey’s request, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2015, at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay, N.S. A private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney, N.S.
For those who wish, donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) or the Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
