Alexander MacGillivray

Passed on: June 13th, 2015

We, the family, regret to announce the sudden passing of our dear brother and uncle, Alex MacGillivray, 63, on Saturday, June 13, 2015.
Alex was the son of the late Daniel Thomas and Mary Margaret (Young) MacGillivray. He was a student of the very first graduating class of B.E.C. High School in 1971.
In his earlier years Alex worked up north in various nickel and gold mines. He worked his way from labourer to heavy equipment operator and retired as a blasting supervisor in the 80s. Alex was affectionately referred to as 'Smiley' to his friends in the mining industry. He spent most of his leisure time hunting and fishing. Alex loved to watch hockey and was a big fan of the Montreal Canadiens. He enjoyed living out in the yard tinkering on some project.
Alex was a quiet person and a very kind and loving brother and uncle. He was always ready to help out his family in any way that he could. We will miss him.
Besides his parents, Alex was predeceased by his brother, Daniel and his sister, Catherine, as well as three siblings in infancy.
Alex is survived by brothers, Robert 'Bobby', Glace Bay, Michael (Mary), Dominion and John (Claire), Dartmouth; sisters, Barbara MacGillivray, Lingan, Theresa (Peter) MacInnis, Coxheath, Ann (Ray) Dimock, Dartmouth and Mary Hogan, Ontario; many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his nephew, Jerry Hogan, who was more like a brother to him.
A private family funeral service was held at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, New Waterford, officiated by Fr. Ray Huntley. Burial followed in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of one's choice.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at: www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
