Ermel, Roach, (Church), Shirley Adele, 92, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2015, in the Hanover Care Centre, Hanover, Ontario, after a long illness with Parkinson’s Disease. Born on March 6, 1923, in Belmont, Hants Co., NS, she was a daughter of the late Dexter and Arabelle (Wallace) Church. She trained as a Registered Nurse at Highland View Hospital, Amherst and after graduating in 1945, nursed in hospitals in Windsor, Wolfville and Halifax. She married Stuart Roach of Wolfville in 1947 and they moved to Toronto where she continued her nursing career. In 1958, they moved to Hanover, Ontario, where they owned and operated an elder care facility for many years. When Stuart became ill, she nursed him until his death in 1983.Later she married Edgar Ermel, Hanover, and when he, too, became ill, she nursed him also, until he passed away. Shirley was a very caring person who spent her life in the service of others. She was always supportive of family and friends and had a loyal following of devoted friends of all ages who were in her life until the end. She was well-known for her beautiful smile and positive, congenial manner. She was a member of Grace United Church in Hanover and gave of her time in volunteer activities in the community. She is survived by sisters, Elizabeth (Betty) Taplin, Newmarket, Ontario, and Diana Bishop, Kentville, NS, sister-in-law Shirley Church, Dartmouth, NS, and many nieces and nephews in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by first husband Stuart Roach, second husband Edgar Ermel, sister Eileen Purdy, Montreal, brothers, Gilbert Church, Windsor, Elliott Church, Poplar Grove, and two nieces, Paulette Leighton, Poplar Grove and Patti Deveau, Windsor. Cremation took place and a celebration of Shirley’s life was held Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 11:00 am in Mighton’s Funeral Home, Hanover. Interment followed in the Hanover Cemetery beside her first husband. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff at Hanover Care Centre for their compassionate care and to her many devoted friends who visited her regularly.
