Cody Michael Smuk

It is with great sadness, after a courageous battle with cancer, Cody Michael Smuk passed away peacefully the morning of June 25th, 2015 at St. Paul’s Hospital. Cody was born on May 11th, 1989. Cody was predeceased by his grandpa Lloyd Aupperle; and grandparents Mike and Anne Smuk. He will always be lovingly remembered by his parents Marty and Darla; his sister Brittnie Smuk; his fiancée Stephanie Vause and her family; and his honorary brother Garrett Thiessen; along with numerous family and friends. Born and raised in Saskatoon, Cody attended Lakeridge Elementary School where the foundation of many remaining friendships began. At 16, he began his WHL career with the Chilliwack Bruins while continuing his online learning through Evan Hardy Collegiate here in Saskatoon. A sports enthusiast, he was always passionate about soccer and the NFL even though his heart was always with hockey. After two years with the Bruins, Cody moved back to Saskatchewan to finish his career with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Shortly after, he was enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan; he pursued and received his Bachelor of Commerce degree in management with a focus on financing from the Edwards School of Business. While attending University he was a member of the Huskies hockey team beginning in 2010 and where he met the love of his life, Stephanie Vause. Lucky for him, her love of sports and adventure made them the perfect fit. A big guy with a big heart, Cody was always willing to lend a helping hand, and put the needs of those around him first. During this past year Cody enjoyed many weekends out at our family cabin, where he became quite the fisherman. Even though he is no longer with us, the memories made throughout his past 26 years will remain present in our lives forever, and we hope that his spirit will continue to influence those he touched. Lastly, we’d like to thank the community, family and friends for their continuous support throughout the past year. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Oncologists and nursing staff at the Cancer Clinic here in Saskatoon as well as St. Paul’s Hospital staff for the excellent care Cody recently received. We are forever grateful for everything that has shown our family how much Cody was loved. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Choc’ la Cure foundation online at www.choclacure.com. A Celebration of Cody’s Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30th at Elim Church (419 Slimmon Road, Saskatoon).
