Paul Janssens

JANSSENS, PAUL HENRY
Paul Janssens, 74, of Fredericton, passed away peacefully on July 4 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island with his wife and children at his side.
His son Ryan had been married in December to Maribeth Butler of PEI. Their wedding reception (scheduled for the beginning of July) was something Paul had been very much looking forward to.
Born in Reserve Mines, Nova Scotia on January 12, 1941 and growing up in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Marie Metz and Oscar Janssens of Liege, Belgium. He married Helen Gallagher of Saint John 47 years ago.
Paul graduated from Central High School in New Waterford. He then attended Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto, graduating with a Diploma in Radio and Television arts in 1962. Following this he worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in Halifax and was transferred to Fredericton as an announcer when the station first opened in 1964. In 1966 he also became Sports Editor of the Daily Gleaner. After working in the media for eight years, he began taking night and summer courses toward a Bachelor of Arts degree at Saint Thomas University with honours in French and Political Science. He then attended Law School at the University of New Brunswick, graduating in 1975. Paul practiced law for 38 years. In 1999 when Small Claims Court was introduced in New Brunswick he was appointed as an adjudicator by the Attorney General and Justice Minister.
Paul was known for his joie de vivre, his cooking and his wit. He was dedicated to his family and was a lifelong supporter of the Liberal party of Canada and the New Brunswick Liberal Party. He was a great fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Raptors. He and Helen had a cottage on Lake George and shared many happy times there with his children, his good friends and in recent years, his grandchildren.
If a man could plan his last day on earth, he might invite his family and close friends to an island, have visits with many of them throughout a sunny day. In the evening he might put on his best suit and share a terrific steak dinner in their company overlooking the sea, while toasting love, joy and his son of whom he was so proud. After the meal he might leave the group as they celebrate on into the night. Then, in the dawn of the next morning with only his wife and children around him he might breathe his last breath. Although unplanned, this is what Paul did.
In addition to his wife Helen, he is survived by his two children Dr Kelly Janssens (David Hogan) of Dublin, Ireland, and Ryan Janssens (Maribeth) of Ottawa, Ontario. Also surviving are two grandchildren Rose and Conor Hogan and his brother Henry Janssens (Barbara) of Richmond Ontario, cousin Joe Metz (Diane) of Baddeck, Nova Scotia, niece Carol Clark (John) of Stafford, Virginia, U.S.A., and nephew David Janssens (Debbie) of Richmond, Ontario.
Pallbearers will be nephews David Janssens, Joel LeBlanc, Jean-Marc LeBlanc, Paul Masterson, Guy Desaulniers and friend Michael Kimball.
Visitation will take place at Bishops Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton on Wednesday July 8, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Funeral services will be held at St. Dunstan’s Parish on Thursday July 9 at 3:00 pm with Rev. John Jennings officiating. This will be followed by a short reception and internment in Hermitage Cemetery at 5:30.
For those who wish to make a donation in Paul’s memory, contributions to Chalmers Hospital Foundation, or the N.B. Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice. Online condolences and the sharing of memories may be expressed through www.bishopsfuneralhome.com
