It is with sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of Alice Christine Aucoin, 81, on Sunday, July 5, 2015, at the New Waterford Consolidated Hospital.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Kathleen (Edwards) Aitkens.
Alice was a member of the former Mount Carmel Parish, currently the Parish Church of St. Leonard. In earlier years, she was employed with Delux Cleaners, Rudolph’s Grocery and Woolworths for 27 years. She was a member of the CWL, St. Vincent de Paul foodbank, Combined Christmas Giving, Kinnetts, and the Hospital Auxiliary. Alice volunteered her time at the Maple Hill Manor and Midtown Villa. She was also a longtime volunteer and fundraiser for numerous charitable organizations. In 1998, CBRM awarded her the Tom Miller Human Rights Award in recognition of her dedication and outstanding service in the community, particularly for those disadvantaged by discrimination or poverty. Alice enjoyed crafts, especially quilting, and was known to make several items of clothing to keep her loved ones warm for years to come.
Surviving are her sons, Kevin (Janet), Darryl (Michelle); grandsons, Jack, Marc and Jadon; sisters, Teresa (Greg) Blackwood and Emma Syms; many nieces and nephews; special friend, Elaine Parsons.
Besides her parents, Alice was predeceased by brothers, Joe, Mickey and Greg; sister, Sarah MacCormick.
Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 8th from 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Thursday, July 9th at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard’s Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
