Frederick Reid

REID, FREDERICK "FRED" F., MMM, CD
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Fred, at the age of 85, on June 23, 2015. He passed peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital with his family at his side.
Fred is survived by his wife Kathleen (nee Hovey) of 62 years, his sons Stephen (Shelley) Reid and Kelvin (Sylvia) Reid, his daughter Ellen (Robert) Clement, grandchildren Michael (Sarah), Danielle, Kelsey (Richard), Alison, Stephanie, Sarah, as well as, his sister Grace (Vaughan) Donally and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Anna (Fairley) Reid, his brothers Owen, Elva, Carl and his sisters Reta Munn, Noel Moore, Dianna Amos and Clara Norrad.
Fred was born in Holtville, New Brunswick on January 15, 1930. He had a 37 year career in the Military until his retirement in 1985, with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. As a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force his career included multiple postings in Canada, four years in West Germany with NATO and service with Canadian Peacekeeping Forces in the Golan Heights, as part of the United Nations Emergency Forces in the Middle East. The highlight of his military career was being appointed a Member of the Order of Military Merit which was presented to him by Governor General Jeanne Sauve in 1984.
Fred's love of sports included playing with the Royal Canadian Air Force Sabres hockey team and competing in baseball, curling and golf. He and a group of friends were co-owners of Brimstone Stable and raced a number of thoroughbreds at Assiniboia Downs. After moving to Vasa Lund Estates, he enjoyed playing shuffleboard and bridge there with friends. An active outdoorsman he enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with friends and family. His love of the outdoors also extended to camping and gardening.
Upon retirement Fred and Kay frequently returned to New Brunswick, the Province of their birth. They travelled across Canada from coast to coast and north to Great Slave Lake. They enjoyed winter vacations to California and Florida. Fred became a full time grandfather never missing an opportunity to spend time with his grandchildren. He always showed them how proud he was of their accomplishments in school, work, sports and other activities. Grampie was always keen to teach them to play cards, fish, golf and so much more. He laughed at their stories and enjoyed lively discussions on current events.
We would like to thank all the health care professionals who cared for Fred during his illness. We extend special thanks to the WRHA Palliative Care Team for their home visits and Dr. St. Godard and the team at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their care and compassion during the final days of his illness.
In keeping with Fred's wishes, a private family service was held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home on June 27, 2015.
If friends or family so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. www.chapellawn.ca
