Lena MacNeil

Born In: Glace Bay

Passed in: Glace Bay
Passed on: June 20th, 2015

With saddened hearts, we regret to announce the death of Lena MacNeil of Seaview Manor - formerly of Archibald Avenue, Sydney, at the Glace Bay Hospital on Saturday, June 20, 2015.
Lena was born in Glace Bay to Dan A. and Molena (Redquest) MacNeil and raised by cousins, Michael and Elizabeth ‘Lizzy’ MacNeil in Sydney.
Lena worked for a time at Eaton’s, but spent most of her years working at the front desk of the Isle Royale Motel, a position she loved and often talked about.
The Catholic faith was of great importance to Lena, and before ending up in Seaview Manor with Alzheimer’s in 2014, she attended mass regularly, was a member of St. Marguerite Bourgeoys C.W.L. in Sydney, and was involved in a Rosary Group. Many of these get-togethers, which she enjoyed very much, were held in her home.
Lena also loved a game of cards and played solitaire almost daily. She also bowled, and when she was able to drive, was on the road constantly. Music was also a big part of her life, as was life in general. In her earlier years, she was very proud to be able to speak some Gaelic. She was a kind, caring person, and took great joy in the simple things of life, especially nature.
Lena stayed home to look after her parents, and in later years, was like a “mother hen” to her beloved brother-in- law, Rannie Mullaly, who passed in March of this year.
Besides her parents, Lena was predeceased by her sisters, Regina Mullaly, Johnena Bragg ‘Neenie’, Christina MacInnis ‘Tootsie’, and by her brothers, Charles, Angus, and Edward ‘Bitts’, as well as her brother-in-law, Rannie. She was also predeceased by her nephew, Dan MacInnis, Truro; grandniece, Elaine Bennett, Lower Sackville, N.S.
She is survived by her five nephews, Gerard (Joan) Randall, Ontario, Danny (Mary Lou, deceased) Randall, Sydney, Norman (Myrna) MacNeil, Toronto, Donnie (Ginger, deceased), and Eddie (Wickie) MacNeil, as well as her niece, Mary Bennett (Gordon, deceased), Lower Sackville, N.S., and many grand and great-grandnieces and nephews, whom she enjoyed keeping track of.
At this time, we would like to thank the staff at Seaview Manor for showing her such kindness and care during her stay there, and to the staff at Glace Bay Health Centre, especially Drs. Ettinger and Keating for attentiveness while a patient there.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, July 13th, at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church, Sydney, with Fr. Duaine Devereaux officiating. There will be a luncheon after mass, followed by burial at Resurrection Cemetery. The Interment for Rannie Mullaly will also take place at this time.
Donations may be made to Seaview Manor or a charity of your choice.
