It is with broken hearts that we regret to announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, Effie (MacDougall) Lewis, 89 on Monday, July 13, 2015 at home, surrounded by her loving family.
Effie was born in Gabarus on Oct. 21, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Donald John and Mary (Stewart) MacDougall. She left Gabarus when she met and married her husband, Allister Lewis. Mom and dad moved to Whitney Pier where they raised their six children, they later moved to Ashby, finally settling in the North End of Sydney. Effie was a stay at home mom who thrived on having her family by her side. Mom especially enjoyed her Sunday afternoon drives with her son George and daughter Heather. Effie was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Effie is survived by her daughters, Heather (Bernie Farrell), at home, Bonnie (John Holland), Coxheath, Kimberly (John MacDonald), Sydney; sons, Gary (Karen), Howie Centre, Donnie, Oshawa, Ont., seven grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Sydney Homemakers, the VON, and the Palliative Care Services of Cape Breton and Dr. Amanda Woodhouse for her continued support and compassion shown to mom, also thanks to Myrtle Saunders, Effie’s niece and friend for her companionship.
