Ray Hanlon

Hanlon: Ray Edward Hanlon (71) of Swift Current, formerly of Climax, SK. passed away on July 11, 2015 in Saskatoon. Ray was born to Phil and Bea Hanlon on December 9th 1943 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and grew up in Climax, Saskatchewan. In his early years he delivered groceries for the Hanlon General Store with his cousin Roy Rassmussen. In Climax, he and Roy played baseball for the local Climax team which was recently inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. After receiving his BA and B.Ed. from the University of Saskatchewan, Ray started his teaching career in 1966 in Frontier before moving to Swift Current where he taught at Irwin Collegiate, Beatty School and the Swift Current Comprehensive High School. It was in the early teaching years that Ray met Linda Grobowsky whom he married in 1973. Ray and Linda were blessed with the arrival of Briana. She was the apple of his eye and he supported and encouraged her in everything. He was so very proud of her. Ray had a strong analytical mind and he loved to share his insights on these subjects with his students. They appreciated that he could take a scientific concept or a multi-step mathematical process and simplify it for them. He was respected both in and out of the classroom, participating in numerous extra-curricular activities including coaching and student council advisor. He retired in 1996 after 30 rewarding years of teaching. After retirement, he took an active role in his community as a hearing officer for the Highway Traffic Board and volunteered extensively for both the Swift Current Housing Corp. and for the Canadian Cancer Society. He was an avid gardener, voracious reader and loved to travel. He enjoyed a good game of cards and the challenge which comes with games and puzzles. His competitive spirit took him to many bridge tournaments. He served as the director of the Swift Current Duplicate Bridge Club. Ray always had a great interest in his family's roots, spending many hours researching his genealogy. He is particularly remembered for being a patient, kind, and generous man and loving husband and father. Despite years of struggling with his health, he rarely complained and maintained a positive outlook. He faced his illness with dignity and humour. Ray is survived by his wife Linda (nee: Grobowsky), daughter Briana (Darren) Brownell of Saskatoon, sister Carol Roberts of Saskatoon, brother-in-law Fred (Joan) Herron as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ray is predeceased by his parents Philip and Bernice Hanlon, sister Fay and brother-in-law Barry Roberts. The family will be holding a Celebration of Life at the First United Church on Friday, July 24th at 2 pm. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Mount Pleasant Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Liver Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Ray.
