GREER, EMILY LILLIAN
The death of Emily Lillian (Gould) Greer of Island View, NB occurred on July 25, 2015 at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Predeceased by her husband Burton H. Greer in 2005 she was the daughter of the late George and Hattie (Young) Gould. Emily was born on March 23, 1919 in Fredericton and lost her father to the flu epidemic three months before her birth.
Emily and Burton married in 1939 and have four surviving children: Myrtle (George) Dayton of Island View, Donald (Luann) Greer of Harvey Station, Robert Greer of Traceyville and Carol (Keith) Reed of Moncton. A son Paul died at the age of sixteen months. In addition to her children Emily is survived by sisters Mary Robinson and Hazel Marr and sisters-in-law Doreen Gould and Betty Ferguson, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Emily was a hard working housewife giving her energies to raising her children and helping her husband with the chores associated with living on their farm at Acton, near Harvey. From the farm Burton focused on his livelihood, first as a woods worker and then later in life as a woods contractor. Emily and Burton were among the founding members of the Harvey United Pentecostal Church where for many years they were faithful supporters and leaders, particularly in Sunday School ministry. Emily was well known for her hospitality in providing accommodation and sumptuous home-cooked meals to visiting clergy, family and friends. In 1975 the couple moved from their farm in Acton to Noonan where they continued their involvement of church support at the Noonan United Pentecostal Church. Emily taught children’s Sunday School classes both at the Harvey and Noonan churches for a total of over 35 years.
Besides her husband, parents and infant son she was predeceased by her step-father Alfred Young; brothers, Bennett Gould, Willard (Bill), Murray and Charlie Young; and a sister Myrtle Young.
Visitation will take place at York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Tuesday, July 28 from 7 to 9 PM. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 29 at 2 PM from York Funeral Home’s T. Gordon McLeod Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jack Leaman officiating assisted by Rev. Todd McGuire. Pallbearers are Jody Greer, Jeffrey Greer, Bradley Greer, Robert Reed, Sean Lebeau and Paul Dayton. Interment will take place at the Acton Cemetery, Route 640, Acton.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the doctors and nursing staff of the Doctor Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital Palliative care unit for their empathy, care and service provided to Emily and her family.
For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of New Brunswick or the Harvey United Pentecostal Church Building Fund.
