Derek John Thomas Howells, age 84, of St. Croix, Hants County, passed peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2015 at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, after a long battle with cancer with his family by his side. Born on July 22, 1931, in Hallaton, England, he was the son of the late Francis and Emma (Cox) Howells. Derek immigrated to Canada with his family in 1972, to Windsor, where he worked as a first class mechanic at the Nova Scotia Textiles for two years and then for 22 years as a plant foreman and quality control manager with Simmons Mattress, Dartmouth. Throughout his life he loved repairing sewing machines and truly enjoyed his customers. He was a Scout leader in England for many years. Derek spent two years in Egypt as an airplane mechanic, assembling Spitfires. He has always had a passion for hiking, camping, fishing, family outings and travelling. He was an avid fan of golf, tennis and soccer. He loved his Mac PC. He was branch President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Windsor for three years. Most importantly, he always thought of others before himself. He lived life fully and passionately. His motto in life was “live for today and don’t worry about tomorrow”. Derek is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, the former Jean Eileen Munton; his son, David, St. Croix; daughters, Tracey of St. Croix and Suzanne (Gary), Sydney and her children, Erin and Colin; daughter-in-law, Vicki Howells, Windsor and her daughter, Vanessa; brothers-in-law, Derek Munton, St. Croix; David Munton, England; several nieces and nephews in England and Australia. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Robin Howells (1996); brother, Frank Howells; sister, Truda Hammonds. A memorial service was 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Payzant Drive, Windsor, with President David Evans presiding. Burial will be held at a later date in the Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Derek may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
