It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Violet 'Girlie' Gillis, aged 80, on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015 at the Queen Elizabeth Health Sciences Centre, Halifax, with her loving family by her side.
She was born in New Victoria, N.S., on Feb. 23, 1935 to the late Leo and Caroline (MacKay) McKenna and raised by the late Francis and Mary (MacKay) Brown.
Girlie was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, formerly St. Joseph's Church, New Victoria, the Altar Society of St. Joseph's and the co-founder of the Congregation of Notre Dame Associates. In her earlier years, she worked at the Midtown Drugstore and Maple Hill Manor.
Girlie enjoyed a good game of cards and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survivied by daughters, Murdena (Robert) Burton, Ont., Caroline (Oie) Leudy, New Waterford; sons, Duncan (Joanne), Victoria Mines, Victor (Gail), New Waterford, Leonard, Ont., Melvin, New Victoria; brother, Adrian (Alida) Brown, N.B.; grandchildren, Kristopher, John, Sara; Gillian, Hillary, Ben and Tess; Allison; Kevin, Stephen; Kari, Kelly, Kory, Keegan; and Nicole; great-grandchildren, Lily, Zoey, Leah, Easton, Charlie and Brody; close friends Anne Sweeney and Mary 'Bay' McIsaac.
She was predeceased by her birth parents; her husband, Murdock L. in 1979; her son, Francis in 1993; grandson, Kyle in 1991 and brothers, Sylvester 'Ba' and John.
Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 21st from 5-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will take place Saturday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, New Victoria, with a luncheon to follow at St. Leonard's Parish Hall, Convent Street, New Waterford.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Maple Hill Manor or the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.

Special thanks to the staff and nurses of Maple Hill Manor for their professional and compassionate care to Girlie. Also to Dr. Jhirad and nurses of 4D at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital and the nurses and doctors of unit 4.1 at the Halifax Infirmary.
