Sackville, N.B. - It is with sadness, that the family of Robert Norman Hazlehurst announces his passing on August 28, 2015 at the Sackville Memorial Hospital in Sackville, N.B. Born February 7, 1924 in Lincolnshire England, he was the son of the late George Norman Hazlehurst and Ada Birkett. Bob’s Dad George passed away in 1938 and his Mom remarried Ronald Henry Stech.
Bob grew up in Mexico City and came to Sackville at the age of 16 to attend the Mt. A. Academy. Following graduation from the Academy he returned to Mexico for a short period before being drawn back to Canada to join the RCAF. At the end of the war, Bob enrolled at Mt A where he met his sweetheart, Hazel Henderson (Poppy). Bob and Poppy were married in 1949 and shortly after moved to Mexico City, where sons John and Jim were born. In 1953 they returned to Sackville to stay where sons Peter and Paul were born.
Bob spent many years as a partner at J.E. Weldon Pontiac Buick Dealership, closing out his working career with the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Departments in Amherst and Fredericton.
During his years in Sackville, Bob was an active member of the curling and golf courses and enjoyed fishing at Bulmer’s Pond Fishing Club in Frosty Hollow. He was a Mason and member of the Sackville Rotary Club, K40 and volunteered with the local Meals on Wheels program.
Bob and Poppy and their boys enjoyed many fine days at the family cottage in Cape Tormentine.
He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Poppy, his brother John Stech and son Paul who passed away in 1984 as the result of an accident.
He will be sadly missed by his sons, John (Peggy) of Truro NS, Jim (Carla) of Moncton NB, Peter (Louise) of Bedford NS; his grandchildren, Mark, Katie, Laura, Kevin, Steve, Ben and Alex; his great-grandchildren, Liam and Austin and by his sister-in- law, Doreen Henderson.
Bob’s family would like to extend their heart felt appreciation to the many kind people of Sackville who assisted him in his later years including Dr. Wall, Extra Mural Nurses, Staff of Sackville Memorial Hospital, Aunt Doreen Henderson, Jack Drover, Judy Estabrooks, Staff of Jean Coutu and Save Easy and his wonderful caring neighbours at 26 Landsdowne St.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Campbell’s Funeral Home, 89 Bridge St. Sackville N.B. (506) 364-8188. In keeping with Bob’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visiting hours. The funeral service will take place at Campbell’s Funeral Home on Wednesday September 2, 2015 at 1:00 PM with Wayne Jarvis, DLM officiating. A reception will follow the service. Burial to follow at the Sackville Cemetery.
