Seldon Boyd McNeil Bruce

Passed in: Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: September 3rd, 2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Seldon Boyd McNeil Bruce, loving husband of 49 years to Joyce Madeline (Hartley) Bruce, who died at the home of his daughter in Bedford, NS on September 3, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. Seldon was handsome, charming, and funny with a quick wit and the ability to make anyone laugh. He is remembered fondly by any soul who had the great fortune to know him – young and old alike. If you were lucky enough to get one of his nicknames (flattering or not so flattering) you knew that they stuck like glue and were yours for life. And if you were on the receiving end of his innumerable acts of kindness and charity, you knew how humble a man he was, never wanting praise or recognition for his kindness. Seldon’s military career, which began in 1955, took him to Germany and provided him with the opportunity to visit and experience other areas of Europe. He was proud of serving his country. Seldon also spent endless hours volunteering in his community, as a volunteer firefighter, for Meals on Wheels, and just lending a hand to anyone who needed help. Seldon had many occupations over the span of his life, from the lumber camps in Ontario, the mines in Sudbury, to furniture and barrel making, lobster fishing and head janitor at the Shelburne Regional High School. He was happiest, however, in his last career venture – owner of a refuse removal business from which he retired in 1995. He was a superb athlete – most notably a gifted boxer in his younger years when he achieved Golden Gloves-level status and as a semi-pro ballplayer in Ontario. Locally, he played several years of ball, and is best remembered for his athletic exploits on the Shelburne “Colored Kings” softball team. In his later years he was a much sought after coach and umpire to the younger generations of ball players. Other passions included bowling, curling, horseshoes and washers – he loved hanging out with his friends in all of these activities. Seldon’s woodsmanship was legendary and he treasured the time spent at the hunting camp in Blue Hill with family and friends. As a hunter and trapper, he loved the woods and knew every inch of Shelburne County like the back of his hand. Though no fur or game was safe in his presence, he took great care to preserve the natural state of the environment and cared deeply for its future. Seldon was predeceased by his son Michael Terrance Bruce, parents Bernard and Shirley Bruce of Shelburne and by his sister Queen (Bruce) Morrow (Raymond Morrow) formerly of Manchester, Texas. He is survived by his brother Lawrence Bruce (Julianne Hartley), his sister Colleen (Bruce) Hartley (Frank Hartley) both of Shelburne, his children Thomas Bruce of Cold Lake Alberta, Marilyn (Morrison) Atwood (Roydon Atwood) of Shelburne, Kelley Bruce (John Nowlan) of Bedford. He was a loving grandfather to his grand-children Dylan Rapp, Alicia and Corey Atwood and Maya Nowlan and to his great grand-children Kobe and Aiden Jesso and Jerome and Quentin Atwood. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, and friend. We will miss you dearly, Seldon Bruce. Visitation will be held Friday, September 18 from 7-9 p.m. in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 19 at 2:00 pm in Christ Anglican Church, Shelburne, with Reverend Ed Trevors officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Gove Cemetery, Shelburne. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
