Ernest Patrick O’Brien, age 73, passed away comfortably at home, surrounded by his family and friends on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015.
Born in Glace Bay, Ernie was the son of the late Lawrence and Leona Catherine (O’Connell) (Talbot) O’Brien.
In his early years, Ernie worked at the steel plant in the open hearth department and also worked in the Cape Breton coal mines until his retirement. He was an avid sports fan, he loved his baseball and hockey. Ernie enjoyed listening to country music, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley, he also enjoyed his rock 'n roll dancing and singing.
Ernie will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Theresa (Proctor); son, Ernie (April); daughter, Mary (Marcelo); sisters, Rita (Eddie), Phyllis (Wayne), Margie (Ron), Mary (Bob), Julie (John), Betty; brothers, Hector (Donna), Michael (Brenda) and Rick. Ernie is also survived by 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, brother and sister-in-law.
Ernie was predeceased by his parents, son, Lawrence, brothers, Frankie and Josie and stepfather, Roy Talbot. He will be fondly remembered by the Evely Family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass will be on Monday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. in Holy Cross Church with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. Interment in St. Anne’s Cemetery. A reception will take place in the church hall.
Donations in Ernie’s memory may be made to palliative care and Cape Breton Cancer Centre.
