Joseph 'Curt' Phillips, 38, Waycobah First Nation passed away on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Inverness, he was a son of the late James Googoo Sylliboy and Caroline Phillips. Curt worked for Atoqwa’su Farm Ltd., Waycobah Band and was a member of Waycobah Volunteer Fire Department. He was a former member of the Unamaki Police, Waycobah band councillor and fishery guardian.
Curt loved sports especially hockey and the Calgary Flames, baseball and was a outdoors man. Curt was an organ donor, giving other people the gift of life with his choice. Surviving are his wife, Shannon Toney; children, Brian Richard (15), Kendra Denise (13), Emily Marie (12), chosen son, Kenneth Jerome Googoo (2); sibling, Joseph Noel 'Roo' Phillips (Jessica); nieces and nephews, Brendan, Caroline, Leah and Drew; aunts, Clare Phillips, Christine Googoo, Magit Poulette, Flo Young, Marie Sylliboy, Dorothy Googoo, Sarah Sylliboy, Sue Evans, Cynthia Sark, Eleanor Googoo, Muriel Knockwood, Brenda Prosper, Josephine Peck, Mildred Narvey; uncles, Rod Philips, Grand Chief Ben W. Sylliboy, Larry Sylliboy, Ben N. Sylliboy, John Angus Googoo, Stephen Googoo; godchildren, Scott Phillips, Kayla Bernard, Emmy Googoo, Randy Bernard, Brendan Phillips, Takoda Paul, Angus Googoo, Martha Prosper; mother-in-law, Marquriete Toney; in-laws, Lisa Toney, Tammy Toney, Darryl Toney, Joey Toney, CJ Toney.
He was predeceased by his grandparents, Joe Noel and Mary Ellen Phillips and William and Janet Sylliboy; godparents, Richard and Emily Phillips.
Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Tuesday at the home of his aunt, Clare, 200 Reservation Rd., Waycobah First Nation. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday from Saint Kateri Parish, Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Waycobah with Fr. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh.
