It is with broken hearts that we, the family of John R. Vokey, announce his passing. John peacefully passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, after a short battle with cancer.
Born in England on June 26, 1945, he was the son of the late John and Noreen (Evans); and was a member of Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay.
John was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Penny (Quann); father of Vincent (Rhonda), Christopher (Lisa), Melissa (Martin) and Megan (Adam) and his seven cherished grandchildren, Madison, Taylor, Alexandra, Gabrielle, Nolan, Brayden and Zara. He is also survived by brothers, Jerry, Robert (Emmeline), Trevor, and sisters, Sherrill (Fred), Janice (Nelson), Marlene (Steven) and many other loving family members, including sisters-in-law, Mary and Jean.
At the age of 17, John began his profession as a sheet metal worker, which lasted for 43 years. He was a man of many talents, and had skills in many trades. Woodworking and carpentry were among his favourites. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Glace Bay Council, where he served as Grand Knight for two terms. He enjoyed travelling with his wife, playing guitar, working on his Halloween and Christmas displays, and going to dances with his friends. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by granddaughter, Audrey; sister, Pearl (Shelly); brother, Reggie; father and mother-in-law, Francis and Pearl Quann; sister-in-law, Alice and brothers-in-law, Tony, Tommy and Leo.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay. Visitation for John will be held 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015 in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, at Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Leo Boone officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or to the Palliative Care Society at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
At this time, we, John’s family would like to thank the staff at the Cancer Center, I.C.U., and palliative care for their kind and professional, compassionate care. We will be forever grateful.
