Born June 22, 1918, originally from North Sydney, passed away peacefully on Sept. 20, 2015, at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home, in Antigonish, N.S., at the age of 97.
He will be missed by his five children, Maureen (Guido) Kelly of Hamilton, Kevin (Penny) MacDougall of Antigonish, Anna (Paul) Hannigan of Franklin, Tennessee, Owenita (Aron) Rogers of Dartmouth, and Bryden (Betty) MacDougall of Antigonish; 13 grandchildren, Brian, Adam, Jamie, Bryden, Kim, Erin, Shannon, Casey, Ian, Sean, Alexandra, Kayla and Sarah; one great-grandson, Rowan.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Jessie MacDougall, his wife Rita (Bryden) MacDougall and his only brother John.
Our Dad, Alex spent most of his life in North Sydney and often joked about starting St. Joseph’s School on April Fool's day. He worked for RJ Jabalee for over 40 years. His happiest moments were spent with Mom and friends, sitting in the front porch. After retirement Dad enjoyed gardening, woodworking and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Grampa was known for his gravy, turkey dressing, prime rib roast and brown sugar fudge. Dad was a true gentleman who was kind-hearted and very accepting of whatever came his way.
Dad was a great fiddler and loved listening to Cape Breton music. He became a member of the Cape Breton Fiddlers in the 1970s and travelled with them to many concerts along with his brother John. They played for the Queen at the Citadel in Halifax for Canada Day in the 1980s.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. John Kirkpatrick and his staff in North Sydney for their care over the years and an extra-special thank you to the staff at the RK MacDonald Nursing Home for lovingly caring for Dad and Mom.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney, on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m., with Fr. Francis Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Church Improvement Fund or a charity of choice.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to the W. J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
