Donald Alexander McLeod

WOLFVILLE - Donald Alexander McLeod, son of the late Wilfred (Sandy) and Florence (Florrie) McLeod, was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on April 4, 1929 and passed away suddenly on October 8, 2015.
He was educated at Prince of Wales College and then Dalhousie University, where he applied his skills of logic and practicality to earning a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1952 from what is now the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS). In 1994, his alma mater recognized his contributions with an Honourary Doctorate. He enjoyed a varied career, beginning in his field with an 11-year employment with DuPont of Canada that included various production and technical assignments, most notably including the startup and design of synthetic fibre plants leading to the development and production of Lycra©. In 1963, after working in various locations in Canada and the USA with DuPont, Don took on a new challenge that would lead him back to the Maritimes to settle in Truro as the Plant Manager and then CEO of a joint British/American venture, Crossley Karastan Carpets. He remained in this position for 17 years before moving to Lunenburg where he spent three years at the Executive VP of Atlantic Bridge Company. His final 10 years prior to retirement were spent as the VP Administration at Acadia University, in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. No matter where they lived, Don was always a very committed volunteer in his community, working tirelessly with various service clubs, Boards of Trade, on church committees, the Atlantic Theatre Festival and on several higher education commissions in Nova Scotia. Most recently, Don was very involved with the Windsor Elms Village from the initial planning phases through to the present day as a serving member of their Board of Directors.
Don was married for 54 years to his beloved wife Shirley (McCoy) who passed away in 2008. Following her death, Don felt very fortunate in having found once again, a perfect companion, with whom he shared the remainder of his life. Winnie (MacDonald), her children, Graham (Tina), Ronnie (Dena), Sarah (Andre) and her grandchildren, brought Don much love, joy and laughter. He loved them, they loved him and they will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his older sister, Phyl (Bill Bentley), Kingston, ON, but will be missed very much by his children Margaret (Barry) of Ottawa, ON and Andrew of Windsor, NS, his brother Allan (Charlotte), of Charlottetown, PE, his nieces and nephews (Wilf, Sue (Charles), James, Tim (Melissa) and Lynne (Craig) and their children, as well as by a large collection of dear friends, gathered throughout a life well lived.
On Tuesday, October 13, 2015, friends are invited to a visitation at White Family Funeral Home in Kentville from 6:30 - 8 p.m. A Celebration of Don’s life will follow in the same location on Wednesday October 14, 2015 at 2 p.m. followed by a reception gathering to share our memories and spend time together. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to a deserving charity of your choosing.
