Garnet Edison Irving

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Garnet Edison Irving age 90 of Tidnish, Cumberland County announce his passing on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS.
Born in Cape Bear, Prince Edward Island on March 11, 1925, he was the son of the late Peter and Gladys (Penny) Irving.
Garnet attended school in Murray Harbour, PEI and at the age of 18 joined the Canadian Armed Forces. He served overseas during World War II (South Saskatchewan Regiment). He fought in North Western Europe and was wounded at Dunkirk. Garnet resigned from the army after the war and returned to PEI as a fisherman. In 1952 he rejoined the army (P.P.C.L.L. Regiment) and served in Germany, Calgary, Edmonton, Amherst and Gagetown, NB. While in Gagetown he was a member of Black Watch Regiment and did a tour of duty in Cyprus. He retired from the Armed Forces in 1970 and started working for Robert Noiles Construction as a carpenter and electrician’s assistant. In 1976 he became employed with the Federal Department of Public Works retiring in 1985.
Garnet is survived by eight daughters: Ruth (Gary) St. Peter and Rosemarie Irving both of Amherst, Molly (Joseph) Harrison, Carol (Stuart) Sears, Susan Irving-Hebert, Teresa Irving (Steve Loggia) all of Tidnish, Judy (Paul) Gauthier of Truemanville and Mary (John) White of Kelowna, B.C. and several grandchildren, great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Betty, son Michael, two brothers Albert and Alonzo and son in law Bill Hebert.
Visitation was held on Monday, October 19, 2015 from 7 – 9 p.m. in Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst (902-667-9906).
Funeral service was held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Campbell’s Chapel with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Memorial donations in Garnet’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, MS Society or the Lupus Foundation of NS.
