Arnold  Cyr

Dad embraced the loving arms of Mom and our Good Lord on October 19, 2015, in the Palliative Care Unit at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, with family at his side. Born October 29, 1926 in Fatima, Magdalene Islands, Quebec, he was the oldest child of a family of ten to the late Victor and Ellée (Cummings) Cyr. He came to Pictou in 1943 to work at the Pictou Foundry. In Pictou he met the love of his life, Bessie Richard. Their loving marriage lasted 68 years, raising a large family of ten children, of whom they were very proud. Later, he worked on the SS Lovat and the North Gaspe as Chief Cook /Steward for 25 yrs until 1970. Arnold later took the position of Dietary Supervisor at the Edward Mortimer Nursing Home where he won the hearts and respect of his kitchen staff, “Arnold’s Angels”, as well as those of his colleagues and residents. He retired in 1991 after 16 yrs. He was a very active member of Stella Maris Parish, holding many positions on various committees. Arnold was an Honorary Life Member of Father Gerald MacKenzie Council 8608 of the Knights of Columbus, as well as a Fourth Degree member of Msgr. Moses M. Coady Assembly 2222. He was a devoted and loving husband to Bessie until her passing in Feb. 2013. He instilled in his children the importance of a loving family, the value of a good education and a strong work ethic. Left behind to mourn his passing are his six sons, Donnie (Lucy), Richard (Valerie), Pictou; Ray (Linda), Victor , Ivan (Urzsula), Ontario; Jerry (Linda) Winnipeg; his four daughters, Doris Scanlan (Paddy), Pictou; Mary Boulter (John), Coldbrook; Eileen Lee (Richard), Ridgeway, Ont.; Joan Williams (Bruce MacLean), Dartmouth; as well as 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a large extended family. Also surviving are his only sister, Rose-May, and brothers, Gérald, Edmond, Rodrigue, Antoine, Georges and their families in the Magdalen Islands. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Leo Richard (Hermance), Mass. USA. He was predeceased by his brothers, Rodrigue (in infancy), René and Jérémie and his grandchild, Lori Boulter (in infancy). Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM in the McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou with funeral mass on Friday at 11am in Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church with Father Tom MacNeil officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery, with a reception to follow in the Stella Maris Church Hall. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made in Arnold’s memory to the Pictou County VON or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the nursing and homecare staff of the VON for their wonderful support to Dad, as well as to Gloria Reid and Novelle Crosby, who were truly angels to Dad, providing loving care in his final months. Also, many thanks to Dr. Cheryl Smith, Dr. Gerry Farrell, Rhonda Langille & the Palliative Care staff at the Aberdeen Hospital, as well as David Fulmore and his staff at Fulmore Pharmacy. Every ones dedication to Dad and concern for his well- being was very much appreciated.
