Sister Mary Elizabeth MacLeod (Sr. St. Peter of the Redeemer) died peacefully on Oct. 24, 2015, at the CND Health Care Centre, Sydney at the age of 101.
Born in Mabou Ridge, Inverness County, N.S. on April 8, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Mary Ann (Gillis) MacLeod.
Sister Mary entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in 1933 and made profession in Montreal on Aug. 29, 1935. She taught elementary school in New Glasgow, N.S., before returning to Montreal in 1941 where she continued to teach for the next 20 years.
Mary was a warm and caring person who, upon retirement from teaching, brought her genuine love of people into the ministry of hospitality in CND convents in Montreal and Toronto.
In 1969 Mary returned to her beloved Maritimes where she continued her ministry of service in various local communities, the last of which was St. Theresa Convent in Sydney. Throughout her long life, wherever she ministered, Mary delighted in making new friends whom she embraced with great simplicity. Above all, Mary never forgot her roots in Mabou Ridge, nor the family members she so dearly loved. She spent many hours in prayerful support of each of them.
In 2006, as her health declined, Mary moved to the CND Health Care Centre, where she was most lovingly cared for by the dedicated staff.
Sister Mary was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by sisters, Sarah and Annie, and brothers, James, John Neil, Donald, Archie, John Finley and Charles.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Sister Mary will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Mabou, N.S. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, with Rev, Angus Morris officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery, Mabou.
