James Randell Gushue

Passed on: October 25th, 2015

Passed away on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence. Predeceased by his parents Raymond and Phyllis Gushue and his wife Gail Herder. Leaving to mourn his son Johnathan, daughter-in-law Karen Collingwood, grandchildren Tim, Nick and Allie, sister Bobbi and brother-in-law Jim Redpath, sisters-in-law Ruth Herder and Ginny Russo (Dan), as well as, nieces and nephews. Jim grew up in St. John's, attending Prince of Wales College and Memorial University. In 1956, he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University where he read law. He practiced law in St. John's and also worked in Rome with the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. In 1976, he was appointed as Justice of the Newfoundland Court of Appeal; and in 1996, Chief Justice of the Province, retiring in 2002. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the residents and staff of Kenny's Pond Retirement Residence where Jim had exceptional love and care. Special thanks to Dr. Pat O'Shea and Jim's good friends, Lu Case and Dr. Vince McMahan at Kenny's. A celebration of life will be held at Clovelly Golf Club, 100 Golf Course Road on Thursday, October 29 at 2 p.m. Should friends desire, a donation in Jim's memory may be made to Memorial University, Endowed Scholarship Fund, c/o Alumni Affairs and Development, 20 Lambe's Lane, St. John's, A1C 5S7, or a charity of your choice.
