It is with great sadness and tear filled eyes that we announce the passing of George Nicholas Anthis ‘the Greek’, of Sydney on Oct. 23, 2015 at Taigh Na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay at the age of 80.
Born in Westmount, Quebec he was the son of the late Nicholas and Winnifred (Short) Anthis.
George worked in Ontario as building superintendent for Greenwin Property Management for over 26 years. After returning to Sydney in 1999 and after his retirement he became the custodian for the parish of the Resurrection. George was a boxer in his younger years and a runner; he ran many marathons including the Boston Marathon, where he represented Sydney. George enjoyed back packing and fishing all over Ontario and Cape Breton Island. He was in the Medical Corps with both the Canadian Airforce and Army. George was also chef de cuisine in several restaurants including his father’s restaurant the Chicken Coop.
He is survived by the love of his life Mary (Whalen) for 51 years; children, Sheryl, Kimberly, Nicholas, George Leo, John (Joanne), Rebecca (Mike) and Rose Marie (Luke); as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by son, Richard and brother, William.
Visitation for the late George Anthis will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1st at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2 at The Church of Christ the King. Rev. Glen Kent will officiate. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens.
