It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Capt. Lewis Marmaduke (Duke) Collins at St Clare's Mercy Hospital, St John's on October 30, 2015 in his 85th year. Dearly beloved husband of Lorraine (Fitzpatrick) and father of Judi (Eric) Barter; Bill (Marilyn). Marilyn Pilkington and John (Darlene). Pre-deceased by his first wife, Beulah; his parents, Capt. Frank and Evelyn Collins; brother Clifton, and sister, Kathleen Pearce. Also mourning his passing are his brother Barrie (Louise), St. Catherines, ON; sisters, June Ellison, Prince George, BC; Pamela Brann, Ajax, ON; sisters-in-law Marjorie (Tom) Cooper; Marie Strang; Marie Porter (Norman - deceased); Phyllis Diamond (Lawrence - deceased). Brothers-in-law Bill (Claire) Fitzpatrick, NB; Gerald Doyle (Melinda - deceased). Grampy will be fondly remembered by grandchildren: James (Sharlah) Barter, Danielle Collins (Marco Rodrigues), Mark (Valerie) Barter; Adam (Carolyn McDougal) Pilkington; Heather Collins-Patterson (Jeff); Andrew (Leslie) Collins, Alex Pilkington and Gregory Collins. Duke was a special Great-Grampy to Ethan Patterson, Kate and Jane Pilkington, Elliott and Gavin Collins and William Barter. Many nieces and nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews are also saddened by his passing. He was especially loved by great step-nieces, Maggie, Anna and Maria Murphy. Born in Carmanville, NL on December 23, 1930, Duke spent a lifetime at sea. He was a Master Mariner (Foreign Going) and a Harbour Pilot in St John's and other NL ports. While many friends, relatives and colleagues have pre-deceased him, he leaves behind many more, including his good friends, Capt. Joseph Prim, Mark Matthews and John House. The family would like to express its sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Dialysis Unit, Waterford Hospital, St John's, where "Louie" was a dialysis patient for many years; and to the staff of 4 West, St. Clare's Mercy Hospital for your care and compassion during his recent illness. Visitation at Carnell's Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, St John's on Monday, November 2, 2015 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral service from Cowan Heights United Church, 141 Frecker Drive, St John's, Tuesday, November 3, 2 p.m. Inurnment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, St. John's.
