Passed on: November 10th, 2015

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our loving father and grandfather, Robert Vincent Smith, on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2015, at his home.
Born in Sydney, on May 30, 1935, he was the son of the late John 'Jack' Smith and Margaret (McKenna) Smith.
Robert worked at Eastern Bakeries for almost 50 years. Most people would remember him as "The Bread Man" they saw at Sobeys in Sydney River. Dad bowled for years in the commercial bowling league and enjoyed bowling with friends and neighbours in their Friday night league. He also enjoyed getting together with friends for tarabish. Dad loved family gatherings and valued the time spent with his eight grandchildren. He was a quiet man and a gentleman. Those lucky enough to know him well were fortunate to enjoy his great sense of humour.
Robert is survived by his three children, Bob (Maureen), David (Kelly) and Lynn (Todd); his loving grandchildren, Robert (Melissa), Kirk (Danielle), Brittany (Kyle), Spencer, Andrew, Emily, Nicholas and Ryan; brothers, John (Jan) Smith, Bill Smith; sister, Marie LeDrew (Calvin), sister in-law, Judy Smith and many nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years Maisie (MacLeod) Smith, his parents, his youngest brother Jim Smith and sister-in-law, Annette Smith.
Visitation will take place at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, on Friday, Nov. 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys, Sydney, on Saturday, Nov. 14, 11 a.m. with Fr. Bill Burke officiating.
We wish to extend a special thank you to family physician, Dr. Jim MacKillop; Dr. M.A. Naqvi and Bernice Grant for their great care. We would also like to acknowledge Dr. Paul MacDonald and Sandra Toner at the heart clinic for the kindness they showed our Dad. A special thank you to all the VON staff who visited Dad at home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Society or Heart & Stroke Foundation. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.chantfuneralhome.ca.
