Donald Howlett

Donald Charles Howlett of Swift Current and formerly of Orkney, Saskatchewan, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Friday, November 6, 2015 at the Palliser Regional Care Centre in Swift Current. He was born on May 1, 1926 on the SW1/4 3-2-15 W3rd at Orkney to Charles and Leila Howlett. He was the youngest of five children. Don was predeceased by his parents Charles and Leila, step mother Mary, sister Helen Smith, baby sister Lucy Margaret, son-in-law Brian Campbell, daughter-in-law Jean Howlett, brothers-in-law Harry Smith and Olaf Orvik and nephew David Smith. Don is survived by his wife Verna, whom he was married to for 69 years, children Byron, Karin (Don Mitchell), Judy, Miles and David, sister Jeanne and niece Lorna Sebesteny (Les), grandchildren Mark, Heidi, Kathy, Rob, Sean, Alison, Regan, Krystal, Amber, Erika and numerous great-grandchildren. Don farmed most of his life in the Orkney district except for a short period of time when he worked at Bowing Aircraft in Vancouver, National Biscuit, and on a tug boat on Lake Okanagan at Kelowna, BC. It was during this time he met and married Verna Monsen. Don received his pilot licence in the late 1960’s and enjoyed many hours of flying his Aeronica Champ. He was actively involved in helping to bring electricity, telephones and natural gas to the Orkney district. He had a good sense of humour and especially enjoyed the times he and Verna were engaged in cow chasing! Don and Verna enjoyed many occasions where they shared their love of music. Don believed that Jesus died for his sins and he is with Jesus now. Don will be sadly missed by family and friends. A special thanks to the wonderful people at the Palliser who provided such gentle care. A Private Family Graveside Service was held at Orkney Cemetery on Friday, November 13, 2015 with Minister Shelby Kinrade officiating. Binkley’s Funeral Service of Shaunavon (www.Binkleys.com) was in charge of the arrangements. Memorial Donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Binkley’s Funeral Service at 297-2412 or Toll Free at 1-877-BINKLEY.
