Ronald Smith

Passed on: November 18th, 2015

Ronald Larry Smith passed away at Rosetown Hospital Wednesday, November 18, 2015. Red was born on May 26, 1930 in Tuberose Hospital to Cecil and Ruthe Smith. He was raised on the family farm just west of Sanctuary. He attended school in Sanctuary and then took a welding course in Saskatoon returning to farm with his parents. As a young man, Red enjoyed playing ball and hockey for the local teams. In November 1951, he married Kathy Goheen of Lacadena. They made their home in town but later moved and settled at the Pete McDonald farm a mile north of Sanctuary. They had one son, Lyle.
He and Kathy spent their summers following the chuckwagon circuit. They put on many miles and made many lifelong friends attending rodeos and races throughout the province.
Once Red retired from racing, he took up golf with the same passion he had for curling and the chuckwagons. He never missed "Friday Afternoon Golf" with the guys out at the Kyle Golf Course. In later years, due to a stroke, he wasn't able to golf ,but for some time, would just ride along in the golf cart.
Red was also an avid curler for many years, bringing home many trophies and prizes.
Red was a long-standing member of the Kyle Elks Club, a member of the Kyle Curling Club and Chuckwagon Association for many years.
Red is survived by his son, Lyle (Joanne); three grandsons (and their families): Cody (Jodi), Cohen and Brayden; Ryan (Lindsy), Nixon, Gunnar, and Madden; and Daine (Sandra); sisters, Lois McDonald; Marlene (Tobe) Trytten; Lynne (Doug) Clark; and one brother, Darrel (Darlene) and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Kathy in 1982; his parents, Cecil and Ruthe Smith; brother-in-law, John McDonald; and nephew, Jeff McDonald.
Red will be remembered by his many friends and family.
