WEIR, WILLIAM "BILL" JOSEPH
William “Bill” J. Weir, 95, of the Veterans’ Health Centre, with his loving family by his side, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, November 24, 2015. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Harry and Anna (Doyle) Weir.
Bill was a retired District Manager with the Federal Government Superannuation with over 35 years’ service and attended St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church. A Veteran of WWII, he served in England, Sicily, Italy, Holland, France and Germany with the 10th Battery of the 2nd Field Regiment (RCAF) from September 1939 – 1945. This was the last Canadian Regiment to return in September 1945.
Bill was a founding member of the Civil Service Credit Union, Moncton, Board member of Credit Union Central of NB and received the Distinguished NB Credit Union award for his many contributions over the years. He was a proud member of the Beausejour Curling Club, having joined in 1957 and, over the years, served on various committees within the Club. Bill enjoyed curling, golf, baseball, hockey, but one of his proudest moments was when he built the family cottage in Pointe-du-Chene (1954). This was where he loved spending his summers and all his free time socializing with his friends and spending time with his family.
Bill will be sadly missed by his wife of over 70 years, Eileen (Trites) Weir, of Moncton; daughter, Phyllis Algee (Gary) of Moncton; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family members. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brother, Frank and sisters, Helen and Margaret.
Visitation at Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church (Botsford and Queen Streets) on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at 11:30 am, with Rev. Allison Carroll officiating. Reception in the Church Hall following the Mass. Interment will be in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe.
