It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of David Gregor MacLean on Dec. 9, 2015 in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish, following a brief illness.
Dave was born in Glace Bay on May 7, 1946, the son of the late Bernice (Gregor) and George MacLean.
He is survived by Hinda (Columbus), his wife of 47 years and son, Shaun (Dorothy and her son Ben), Riverview, N.B.; brother, Thomas, New Waterford and sister, Eileen MacKinnon (Martin), Halifax; sisters-in-law, Brenda (Columbus) Steiger (Kevin), New Waterford, Sharon Columbus, Sydney River and Debbie Columbus, Israel. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by brothers-in-law, Jack Columbus (Sharon) and Michael Columbus (Debbie).
Dave received his early education in New Waterford, going on to attend Dalhousie University and graduate from St. Francis Xavier University with a BA and MAdED. He began his broadcasting career at CHER Sydney, later joined CJFX 98.9 XFM in Antigonish as news director and later general manager. He took an interlude from broadcasting, serving as a special assistant to the Honourable Allan J. MacEachen in the 1970s and 80s. Dave was very active in the credit union movement, serving as chair of several boards including Bergengren Credit Union, Credit Union Central of Nova Scotia, Atlantic Central and Credit Union Central of Canada. On several occasions he served as a delegate to the World Council of Credit Unions. Under Dave’s leadership, the four Central’s representing N.S., N.B., P.E.I. and Nfld. amalgamated to form Atlantic Central. Dave also served as a director of League Data. Dave was true to his Scottish roots, serving twice as president of the Antigonish Highland Society and at the time of his death, was a director of the Antigonish Highland Society Foundation. He was inducted as a life member of the Antigonish Highland Society, the highest honour it can bestow on a member. He was also active with Clan MacLean. For several years, Dave served as a member of the Antigonish Town Planning Committee. He was an amateur radio enthusiast (VE1DML) and communicated with people from around the world. Dave loved to travel in the company of Hinda and family, with many trips taking them to the far corners of the globe. Dave had a keen interest in politics and world affairs and engaged in vigorous discussions pertaining to the issues of the day.
Visitation will be in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College St., Antigonish on Sunday, Dec. 13th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held in C.L. Curry Funeral Home on Monday at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Dave can be made to the Antigonish Highland Society Foundation or the charity of choice.
